Case Study: Printed Electronics Supply Chain: High Force Research Ltd
Established by its three founders, who had previously worked together in Teesside, in 1988, at the Mountjoy Research Centre, Durham University Science Campus; High Force Research moved to purpose built laboratories in the nearby town of Bowburn in the mid 90s.
High Force Research offers a confidential, high quality, chemical synthesis and research and development service to the pharmaceutical, life science and fine chemical industries.
High Forces Researchʼs initial work was in the veterinary pharmaceutical sector, achieving considerable success with a process for a product still used today in Third world countries to cure disease in cattle.
Having grown steadily from just 3 staff, HFR now employs 24 people, with backgrounds in fine chemicals and commerce. With directors who are real “hands on chemists”, HFR has gained an excellent reputation and is well positioned in the supply chain, being a flexible, agile company, able to respond to market trends and opportunities as they arise.
It was this reputation that lead to an approach from the Printable Electronics Technology Centre, PETEC, who were having difficulty with novel organic semiconductor materials. HFR were able to address the problems that had been experienced, achieving scale up of quantity and near 100% purity in a product called TIPS- pentacene.
This has lead to further collaborations over the last 3 years with PETEC, in particular using their chemical expertise to work on proprietary molecules, making them commercial relevant and viable. During this time HFR has become part of the Northern Way initiative, which has further enabled them to liaise closely with PETEC, resulting in the production of world-class materials.
As the market for printed electronics develops and the need for commercial quantities become necessary, HFR will transfer the process to manufacturing companies, who they will “hand hold” and guide through scale up, taking royalties on the process for which they hold the IP.
